Matt Gottlieb is a 2008/2009 Ovation Award Nominee for Lead Actor in a Play for his role as Gabriel Hornstein in WHO LIVES?  presented by Renal Support Network. He was previously nominated for Best Direction of a Play for THE CARETAKER at the Zephyr Theatre.

As an Ovation Award Nominee, LA Stage asked Matt the following questions:

What was the moment that first inspired you to pursue working in the theatre?

Playing the Cowardly Lion in the third grade - with whiskers and a tail!

What do you feel made the production you were nominated for particularly successful, either overall or for you specifically?

Brilliant casting by Director Joe Ochman and Casting Director Danny Goldman.

What project or projects are you currently working on?

“A Valve Job on the Toyota!”

What do you love most about theatre in Los Angeles?

The “kindness of strangers” … and goin’ for Chicken ’n Waffles after!!!!

What’s your dream project?

“The Carl Jung Story”.

Biography: MATT GOTTLIEB began as a very young man, performing in modern dance, street theater and avant-garde troupes in New York.  Migrating west, he took formal conservatory training in Theater Arts at the California Institute of the Arts, which began an acting career that has taken him to many West Coast regional theaters, such as A.C.T., Berkeley Rep, The Mark Taper Forum, Marin Theatre Co., San Jose Rep and the Laguna Playhouse–and to many of the best smaller theaters, such as The Odyssey, Pacific Resident Theatre and The Berkeley Stage Co.  During the 1980s he once again lived in New York and worked at The NY Shakespeare Festival, The Long Wharf, Circle Rep, Soho Rep and once on Broadway.  On television he has Guest-Starred on  Without A Trace, Still Standing, Boston Public, The Practice, Nash Bridges, JAG and Wings.  His most recent stage appearance was as Caesar in Julius Caesar at Shakespeare Santa Cruz, for director John Sipes.  He has received an Ovation Award Nomination for his direction of Pinter’s The Caretaker (at the Zephyr).
