Lowe Taylor is a 2008/2009 Ovation Award Nominee in the Acting Ensemble category for her work in DIVORCE! THE MUSICAL which was produced by Rick Culbertson, in association with Lynn Marks and Paradox Entertainment.
As an Ovation Award Nominee, LA Stage asked Lowe the following questions:
What was the moment that first inspired you to pursue working in the theatre?
Hmmm. That is a good question. I was always an outgoing child. I used to memorize poems and short stories from Shel Silversteins “A Light In The Attic” when I was a kid and then perform them for my mom and her friends. I’m sure my mom loved that. Haha. I think it was when I went to theater camp when I was 10 and did my first musical. I was an orphan in Oliver. I’ll never forget how thrilling it was to perform “Food Glorious Food” for a crowd of people. From that point on, I just knew it was something I wanted to do. But I think I was about 15 or 16 when I started getting professional jobs that I realized what I loved to do could actually be a viable career. Otherwise, I probably would have been a good lawyer. I like to argue and debate.
What do you feel made the production you were nominated for particularly successful, either overall or for you specifically?
There was so much passion involved in Divorce! The Musical. Everyone involved put their entire heart and soul into the project, from the writer to the music director and director, producer, cast, musicians, crew… EVERYONE. We all loved the project and loved each other and I think that comes through on stage. Not to mention, divorce is something we’ve all experienced whether first hand or a friend or family member. And to be able to look at it poignantly yet still enjoy the humor of it, I think it was universal.
What project or projects are you currently working on?
As I write this, I am at a coffee shop in New York City about to head to my Friday evening production of The Marvelous Wonderettes. And even though New York is a magical place for theater and I am very greatful for this experience, I must say I miss Los Angeles and the blooming theater scene we have. There really is no place like home.
What do you love most about theatre in Los Angeles?
There are so many instances in Los Angeles that as a theater performer you have to work for a low wage. And I think that lends itself to performances, producers, director, etc working for the LOVE of the work and the CREATION of the art. I see so many pieces in LA that are filled to the brim with depth and emotion. Its very moving and I’m lucky to count myself a small part of that community.
What’s your dream project?
Wow. I have always wanted to play Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. Its a show that is rarely done, but being a little Jewish girl that is constantly compared to Barbara (its bizarre but it happens a lot) that role would just be a dream.
