LA Stage alliance has a number of programs we run for our members. The most known is the Ovation Awards, the only peer reviewed theater awards in the Los Angeles Area. while that is a big part of what we do in support of our members, we don’t spend the rest of year just dreaming about aqua ovators. This is the first part in a periodic series of posts about what each of our programs are, our goals for those programs and how members can take advantage of these programs.
Today we’ll look at the LA Stage Times.
Who is the LA Stage Times:
The LA Stage Times is a partnership between LA Stage Alliance and the LA Times, which has been ongoing for the last 15 years. In The LA Stage Alliance office, the LA Stage Times are taken care of by me, Ian Garrett, you can reach me at 213-614-0556 ext 16.
What is the LA Stage Times:
The LA Stage Times is a block of advertising space which we place every week in the Calendar Section of the LA Times that runs Thursday-Sunday. Because of our partnership we are able to offer the ad space at a large discount, typically about 70% less than the rates if you went directly to the LA Times. All of the listing we place in the LA Stage Times are text only, one column (1.81 inches) in width and are either 1/2, 3/4, 1, 2, or 3 inches long.
Where is the LA Stage Times:
The LA Stage Times appears in the Calendar section of EVERY copy of the LA Times. The LA Times has the second largest circulation of any metropolitan paper and the 4th largest circulation of ANY paper in the nation. It is widely read throughout the Western United States, though is primarily read in Southern California. It is read by almost 1 million people daily, and more than a million on Sunday.
When is the LA Stage Times:
We are working on the LA Stage Times throughout the week. We take reservations for space and copy submissions until 5pm on the Friday before the LA Stage Times runs on the following Thursday. Once we have everyone’s reservations and submissions we start to put the LA Stage Times together first thing on Monday. By noon on Monday we know the size of the LA Stage Times, have reserved that space in the LA Times and have circulated a copy of the 1st proof to all of those who have reserved space. We make changes until the end of business on Monday or until everyone has signed off on their portion of the LA Stage Times.
The LA Stage Times then appear every Thursday-Sunday in the Calendar section of the LA Times. It is the same on each of those days.
Once we’ve got the LA Stage Times set and to print, we start to work on the next week by sending out confirmation emails about who and what will continue the following week. We also periodically send out invitations to shows which are opening soon.
Why do we do we run the LA Stage Times:
Practically, We want to help our members get shows into the LA Times and have a leg up to do so without having to pay the same rates as commercial businesses who can afford to buy the ad space at full price. Though the program started when the LA Times did provide full listings for local theater, they no longer do and we want to provide an alternative to our members so that they still appear in print in a way that people can look for every week. We might not all subscribe to the LA Times, and all subscribers to the LA Times may not be interested in theater (though they should right?), but there are a lot of people who subscribe, or purchase the paper regualrly who are interested and we want to make sure there is an outlet for our members to be able to connect with that potential audience.
How do you get involved with the LA Stage Times:
You can call or email me. My email is igarrett@lastagealliance.com and the number is (213)614-0556 ext 16 (or just ask for Ian). We have different rates depending on the size of ad and the size of your theater and do offer non-members placement at a premium over member organizations.
To see what the LA Stage Times looks like, pick up a copy of the LA Times between thursday and sunday on any week to have a look at it in print. We also upload it to the blog, our website and at lastagetimes.com so that you can download it to have at home.
