I am stunned that Annenberg receives any respect in the World of Arts and Culture. Annenberg is at the forefront of an unpopular and culturally boorish effort to dismantle Philadelphia's Monticello, The Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA. HEY ANNENBERG: CLOSE THE BARNESGATE! Help Keep The Barnes in Merion! Barnesfriends.org Artjail.org

I enjoyed your comments very much, Collin.

Yes, I think conservatism does have a role to play in the theater. It's true we don't have many plays written from a traditional "right-wing" perspective, and plays don't generally touch on conservative wedge issues such as abortion.

However, many arts orgs are very conservative in that they exist to support the status quo. They offer audiences comfort and remind them of the good old days, rather than challenge them to receive new information and new ways of thinking.

When I lived in NY I was a subscriber to the NY Philharmonic. Probably the most conservative arts institution I've ever encountered. I was the only person there under 40, and also the programming was so traditional, and the whole thing was just about CONSERV-ing the old ways.

So without doing art that is about "right-wing" issues, like stem-cell research or Prop 8 or whatever, there are many arts orgs like the NY philharmonic that manage to be quite conservative in their own way.

Thanks, Matt. I'll definitely check it out. I agree, if we can forge these new models and force the professional critic and/or their publication to become part of the conversation - who knows where it will take us!

Keep up the good work!

I couldn't agree more. There is way too much emphasis on the individual rather than on the artistic craft. Personally, the performances of ensemble theatre that I have seen have been not only more interesting but superbly performed.
I firmly believe that if one focuses on the art then success will follow.
